The Wind Tunnel Rupture Chamber is a custom-engineered safety pressure vessel designed for the high-energy aerodynamic simulation platform at the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This equipment plays a critical role in safeguarding the wind tunnel system during short-duration overpressure events such as detonation or deflagration.
Its engineering requirements called for high wall thickness, structural integrity under transient loads, excellent impact resistance, and seamless system integration — all tailored for scientific experimentation in aerospace and energy-related fields.

Heavy-Wall Construction: The shell thickness of 115 mm provides exceptional resistance to internal explosion loads, capable of withstanding transient pressures of 10 MPa or more.
High-Strength Materials: 20MnMoNbⅣ was selected for its superior high-temperature performance and fatigue resistance. It is paired with 16MnⅢ for flange and nozzle components to ensure weldability and mechanical compatibility.
Precision Welding & Heat Treatment: The chamber is fully welded using submerged arc welding (SAW) and underwent post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve residual stress and enhance structural durability.
Full NDT Quality Control: All major welds were inspected by 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) and radiographic testing (RT), and dimensional tolerances were controlled within ±2 mm.
Instrumentation Integration: Multiple nozzles are pre-configured for pressure sensors, rupture disks, and modular quick-flange connections, supporting adaptability across various experimental setups.
Safety Assurance in Research: This rupture chamber serves as the primary overpressure safety unit for detonation and high-speed flow experiments, protecting key wind tunnel structures from damage.
Platform Compatibility: The chamber is designed with flexible interface arrangements, making it compatible with existing and future test systems.
Validated Performance: The vessel has passed hydrostatic testing, FEA stress analysis, and end-user acceptance procedures. It has already been used in repeated high-energy experiments with stable operational feedback.
This project represents a high-precision, non-standard thick-wall pressure vessel designed for scientific experimentation in aerospace research. The production process included tailored structural design, advanced welding, post-fabrication treatment, and rigorous full-process quality assurance.
